These artists produced some of the most vibrant and beautiful landscapes of the twentieth century. The Canadians have kept this particular light under a bushel for far too long… As for Tom Thomson – what he achieved in his tragically short career (just five years) is extraordinary. He is Canada’s very own Van Gogh.

Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven finished its European tour at the end of September 2012. The tour began at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, UK, where it had record-breaking attendance and line-ups in the final weeks. The tour continued on to the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, Norway where it was well received, and then to the Groninger Museum in Groningen, the Netherlands where it also received record-breaking attendance..
Ian Dejardin, Director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, curated this show in partnership with Dr. Anna Hudson, Associate Professor, Canadian and Curatorial Studies at York University and the McMichael's very own Katerina Atanassova, Chief Curator.
Above all elements Canadian, these are painters who knew how to handle paint and colour, and how to turn a small sketch executed on the spot into a high‐pitched studio masterpiece.
