Barbara Pratt - Peony Girl - 2008

Redressing the Subject

Stereotypes relating to gender, nationality, and ethnicity are most readily indexed through the imagery of clothing, as in the “costume” of the beauty queen, the cover girl, the lumberjack or the Indian chief. Kitsch, camp, and humour are mobilized in many of the works in this gallery in order to query the purpose and persistence of received notions and clichés, and to destabilize colonial and paternalistic imperatives.

Artists in this gallery include: Lori Blondeau, Farheen Haq, Kent Monkman, Janet Morton, Jana Sterbak, Camille Turner and Mary Sui Yee Wong.
