Citizenship Ceremony
April 14, 2009

The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Co-Chair of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), and Noreen Taylor, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the McMichael addressed fifty citizenship candidates from thirty different countries at a special citizenship ceremony held at the McMichael on April 14, 2009.
Prior to the ceremony, the ICC, in partnership with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, held a series of community roundtable discussions aimed at strengthening the connection between new Canadians and their communities. The ICC was founded by The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, 26th Governor General of Canada and John Ralston Saul.

2009 Arborist Day of Service
April 29, 2009 
Volunteer arborists from the Ontario Commercial Arborist Association (OCAA) united at the McMichael on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009, for their annual Arborist Day of Service. Volunteers from over forty member companies of the OCAA climbed, pruned, braced and beautified the trees on the McMichael's 100-acre property.
The OCAA annually provides an Arborist Day of Service to communities in order to create public awareness of Arboriculture and improve the welfare of trees.
The McMichael would like to thank all of the volunteers and the OCAA for their tremendous efforts.

Imagine the thrill and prestige of having your artwork on display in the Grand Hall at the McMichael, one of Canada's best-known art galleries. Each year, the McMichael Volunteer Committee brings together some of Canada's most talented artists for their Annual Autumn Art Sale. Funds raised at this event support the Volunteer Committee's initiatives, including children's education at the gallery and the popular Sunday Concert Series featuring artists of the Canadian Amateur Musicians Association.
We invite you to be part of this year's event. Your participation will introduce your work to Canada's art lovers and also help the McMichael Volunteer Committee achieve its fundraising objectives.
The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2009.

Yousuf Karsh: Industrial Images

 The Yousuf Karsh: Industrial Images exhibition is a culmination of Karsh's industrial and commercial work with the Ford Motor Company of Canada, Atlas Steel in Welland, Ontario, and Sharon Steel in Pennsylvania, and a variety of other commercial images. This exhibition explores the tone of Karsh's industrial and commercial portraits in relation to the work and life philosophies prevalent in post-WWII North America. It also explores consumerism, marketing, and the political atmosphere in Canada during the 1950s, through his portraits.
"Karshed": Yousuf Karsh Selected Portraits
On until June 28, 2009
December 23, 2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yousuf Karsh, one of the most important portrait photographers of the twentieth century. To commemorate this, two special portfolios of thirty rare, limited-edition portraits by Karsh are on display at the gallery until June 28 to complement the exhibition, Industrial Images. Karsh's celebrated photographs of Muhammad Ali, Winston Churchill, Jacques Cousteau, Ernest Hemingway, Helen Keller, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and many more are being showcased in an exclusive new exhibit at the McMichael, direct from the Estate of Yousuf Karsh in California.

A Brush with War: Military Art from Korea to Afghanistan
On until June 14, 2009 
The exhibition, A Brush with War: Military Art from Korea to Afghanistan, includes artworks dating from 1947 to 2008. In particular, it explores the two military art programs that started more than twenty years after the Second World War, the Canadian Armed Forces Civilian Artists Program (1968-1995) and the Canadian Forces Artists Program (2001-present). Initially influenced by the art of the First and Second World War programs, over the past sixty years military art has moved gradually in new directions, current works expressing artists' more personal rather than documentary responses to their subjects.

The Arctic Image
On until June 7, 2009
View over thirty works--paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and photographs--from the McMichael's permanent collection and Cape Dorset collection. This exhibition will examine the importance of the Arctic in relation to the Group of Seven and Inuit artists. Juxtaposing works by the Group of Seven artists with those of leading Inuit artists, this exhibition explores the expressiveness and vibrancy of Inuit culture, the spiritual vision of visiting southern artists, and the resulting cultural cross-influences.
