Part of McMichael Concert Series
Experience the acoustic magic of the Woodland Gallery, take an exhibition tour, and enjoy a stroll through the grounds. Have dinner at the Cashew & Clive Cafe, overlooking the Humber Valley, and receive a complimentary coffee with your concert ticket.
Performances begin at 8 pm and will be preceded by a musical conversation with the performers at 7:30 pm hosted by Jaymz Bee of JAZZ.FM91. Concerts will be ninety minutes in length with a twenty-minute intermission. A tour of the special exhibition Morrice and Lyman in the Company of Matisse will be offered at 6:30 pm.
This evening's concert flows out of Africa and the Middle East and incorporates contemporary jazz. The musicians have played together for decades in a variety of settings. Maryem Tollar (vocals and Arabic zither) brings music from Egypt and the Middle East; Waleed Abdulhamid displays his rich Sudanese musical upbringing, playing African and Middle Eastern drums, lute, vocals and more; vocalist Yvette Tollar adds the influence of Soul and Jazz music; and instrumentalists Ernie Tollar, Ravi Naimpally and Demetri Petsalakis contribute the unique style of their multi-faceted Near East Ensemble.
