August 9, 2007 Kleinburg, ON —Robert Bateman is one of the world’s most renowned wildlife artists and a leading environmentalist, On September 1st. the McMichael Canadian Art Collection is pleased to present The Art of Robert Bateman, an exhibition celebrating the artist’s work.
Produced and curated by Dr. David J. Wagner, a noted U.S. authority on wildlife art, the exhibition not only celebrates Robert Bateman’s oeuvre, but also highlights his long-standing commitment to the preservation of natural environments and the restoration of endangered species. This special exhibition, which runs until October 28th, includes more than 50 signature paintings, not only the wildlife paintings for which the artist is so well known, but also architectural scenes, land- and seascapes, and portraiture. Also included are examples of original prints and bronze sculptures so that the works of art on display collectively combine to demonstrate the depth and versatility of Bateman’s artistic output. Complementing the exhibition are the artist’s personal sketchbooks, books, and videos.
Robert Bateman artist was born in 1930. Raised in Toronto, he taught at schools in the GTA and abroad until 1976 when he turned his attention full time to painting. He now lives with his wife Birgit Freybe Bateman on British Columbia’s Salt Spring Island. On September 9th, the artist will attend the McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s opening celebration of The Art of Robert Bateman and, following a brunch time lecture at the gallery, will deliver opening remarks at 2:00 p.m., the official launch time of the celebration.

Following the McMichael showing, The Art of Robert Bateman will travel to the United States for a fourteen-month tour. The exhibition will open on November 24th 2007 at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Other stops on the tour include The Wildlife Experience, Denver, Colorado, The National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the San Diego Natural History Museum in San Diego, California.
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is an agency of the Government of Ontario and acknowledges the support of the Ministry of Culture. It is the foremost venue in the country showcasing the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. In addition to touring exhibitions, its permanent collection consists of more than 5,500 artworks, including paintings by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries, First Nations and Inuit artists.
