McMichael Announces and Celebrates its 40th Anniversary!

8 December, 2005 Kleinburg, ON… The year 2006 is an important milestone in the history of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection: the 40th anniversary of its official opening as a public art gallery on July 8, 1966.

Noreen Taylor, Chair of the McMichael Board of Trustees commented: “Our 40th Anniversary marks the beginning of a new and exhilarating era for the gallery. This is a new season of exciting, stimulating and thought-provoking exhibitions, education programs and special events and we are all proud to take part in its celebration.”

In honour of Robert and Signe’s significant gift to the people of Ontario of their prized collection of Canadian art, and as a tribute to their legacy, The Founders’ Story, a photographic installation recounting the history of the gallery recently opened at the McMichael.

The McMichael announcements included an outline of highlights from its exhibition schedule for the year ahead. Specific details on these, as well as for all exhibitions, are available on the newly designed web site at www.mcmichael.com

“Our government is investing $200,000 towards the McMichael Canadian Art Collections’s fortieth anniversary in particular the Norval Morrisseau exhibition, which will take place in 2006,” said Minister of Culture Madeleine Meilleur. “This exciting year of celebration will continue to enrich our lives, old and young alike, through special activities complementing the exhibitions.”

The Permanent Collection galleries will be completely reinstalled with a completion date of May 2006. The works on display, many seldom exhibited before, will provide a fresh new perspective on our permanent collection

On March 11 2006, the gallery opens the Favourite Forty, a special, innovative exhibition comprised of forty works by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries as chosen by gallery visitors from among sixty of the most popular pieces from our permanent collection. Other upcoming exhibitions include The Road: Constructing the Alaska Highway and Robert Davidson: The Abstract Edge.
